Programs

Colonial House serves preschool-aged children from two to six years of age with half-day and full-day options. Colonial House also serves toddlers with our First Year’s program starting at age two. This program is a wonderful introduction to the classroom environment for the child just leaving the nest or the seasoned independent child ready for a Full Day. We work closely with first-year students and parents to ensure they transition well to their new environment, as each child is considered a unique part of our very special community.

Colonial House serves children with our Pre-K mixed-aged classroom of ages 3-5 with options to attend two, three, or five days. The children in the Pre-K program, regardless of the days they attend have access to all our Centers that are listed below. The center-based classroom works on a four-week rotation to create a balance in their educational needs.

We also offer a half-day and full-day Transitional Kindergarten program that ensures the readiness of your child for their first experience in kindergarten. Limited in size, this program exposes your child to kindergarten-level work in our small group environment while letting the child indicate their own pace. Children also participate in executive functioning, self-regulation, and conflict resolution activities daily.

Throughout the year, children participate in several local walking field trips. Children will visit the pumpkin patch, the Christmas Tree Lot, the South Pasadena Public Library, and the South Pasadena Fire Department. These trips are always educational in material and a fun way to learn about their community.

Library and Resource Center

Colonial House has an extensive library of rotating children’s books for a range of ages that children can look at independently or have read aloud. The children will be able to utilize our library and resource center on a regular basis to learn about a variety of topics in ways that will prepare students for their future education.

Colonial Express/Circle Time

At Colonial House, your children will take part in engaging circle-time activities in our Colonial Express. Here we will get to know our fellow students, as well as be introduced to each of our monthly themes. Dancing, sing-alongs, and exploring concepts like calendars and days of the week, will encourage active participation in building friendships and learning more about the world around us. We look forward to learning more about our own cultures and those of our friends as we travel with our classmates.

Physical Education, Music, Dance, and Gross Motor

Your child will be working on balance and coordination as well as group cooperation and teamwork. Children will be participating in a variety of physical activities in both indoor and outdoor environments, including yoga, gymnastics, ever-changing obstacle courses, and sports basics. Children can often listen to music and express themselves through dance and movement. There will also be times when children learn the steps to an organized dance.

Cooking and Science

Children at Colonial House can actively participate in mixing, measuring, spreading, and counting while making balanced foods and exciting experiments. These activities teach concepts such as math, science, small motor skills, and teamwork. Basic nutrition, proper etiquette, and hygiene are also introduced. Children at Colonial House will also learn about these basics as a foundation that will be built upon as they go through our program.

Spanish

Learning a second language has profound cognitive benefits for young children. By participating in a variety of activities such as games, stories, music, and art, children will learn about the Spanish language. Some examples of what the children will learn include the following: days of the week, months of the year, numbers, Spanish alphabet, common phrases, emotions and much more!

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)

Children will participate in hands-on STEM activities, which will help them explore, observe, ask questions, predict, and integrate their learning in everyday life. By participating in STEM activities, children will improve their creativity, develop critical thinking skills, strengthen their cognitive skills, and develop a love for learning!

Art

The goal of art is to provide children with the opportunity to explore their own creativity and imagination, all while building a basic artistic foundation. Children are taught the basics through structured art lessons centered on building, drawing, painting, and sculpting skills. Through the use of hands-on and engaging activities, children are able to explore and manipulate different media, including paints, pencils, and clay, to produce their own projects. In addition to developing their artistic skills, art also provides children with the opportunity to strengthen their hand-eye coordination and fine motor abilities, including pencil grip and scissor skills.

Physical Education

The goal of physical education is to provide developmentally appropriate activities that promote physical development (gross and fine motor skills), social-emotional development (adult and peer interaction), and language development (expressive and receptive language skills). These activities will be undertaken in an active, caring, supportive, and nonthreatening atmosphere in which every student is challenged and successful.

Goals

Your child will be working on balance and coordination as well as group cooperation and teamwork. Children will be participating in a variety of physical activities in both indoor and outdoor environments, including yoga, gymnastics, ever-changing obstacle courses, and sports basics. Nutrition and independent self-help skills will also be covered. Our goals will align with state standards for children ages 3-5 based on developmentally appropriate milestones within the four developmental domains (physical, social-emotional, language, and cognitive).

Small Groups

The goal of Small Groups at Colonial House is to provide a unique learning experience focused on a child’s own level of skill and development. Building on their interests and exploring the unknown through math, writing, language, and literacy, each class will be divided into smaller groups and exposed to various stimulating concepts. This will provide an enriching atmosphere and prepare children for the skills needed to be successful in future classrooms.

Children will participate in our Colonial Express activities several times each week to get a closer look at the countries we are visiting throughout the school year. Once we visit a new place, we will learn about the history, culture, cuisine, money, and many other topics. Discussing your own family’s heritage with your children will create a more authentic travel and learning experience for everyone in the class.

Library and Resource Center

Colonial House has extensive libraries of rotating children’s books for a range of ages that children can look at independently or have read aloud. We also have iPads, on which children can learn how to appropriately use technology for more than just playing games. Children will be able to utilize our library and resource center on a regular basis to learn about a variety of topics in ways that will prepare students for their future education.

Music and Drama

Each week, children will engage in many different music and drama activities. These artistically focused activities will provide children with opportunities to express themselves through dance, music, and dramatic play. This live-action representation of a child’s artistic side will include learning words to songs, steps to dances, and lines to stories. This creative outlet will help children learn the variety of ways in which they can express themselves, while engaging in a fun and playful way with their fellow classmates.

Life Sciences

A wide variety of everyday tasks will be discussed in our “life sciences” classes. Activities in this area will focus on practical matters to help children adapt to their daily schedules, better express themselves independently and prepare them for the big world that lies ahead. From tying our shoes to minding our manners, children will spend time each week focusing on their role as a citizen in today’s world.

As we approach each school year, we at Colonial House are grateful for the opportunity to get to know your child and his/her special talents and gifts. As always, do not hesitate to ask any of us if you have any specific questions or concerns. We look forward to a great school year!
